Sandy the Golden Retriever

‘Sandy the Golden Retriever’ is the creation of Camberwell 2nd year BA Drawing student Nicki-Joe Baxter. Shown as part of Peek Show at the Biscuit Factory the ‘little fella’, as Nicki-Joe affectionatley refers to him now, has been causing quite a stir. Infact he is becoming quite the celebrity having appeared in the South London Press and on BBC London radio!

Nicki-Joe said “Sandy is a dog I never got the chance to meet in my lifetime. I found a photograph of Sandy the Dog (who used to belong to my great aunt) within a box of old family photographs. I chose to enlarge the image of the dog in order for me to then be able to interact with Sandy, who I have no memory of. I am bringing memories back to life so that one can experience even more happenings: physically engaging with a once, frozen fragment of time.”

Find out more about the project on Nicki-Joe’s homagenarrative blog.

Konsept

‘Konsept’ is by Camberwell BA Photography 2nd year student Jon Maguire and was shown as part of Peek Show at the Biscuit Factory. Having picked up an instruction manual at the show we were curious to find out more about Jon’s piece. Here’s his reply:

“This particular installation for the Biscuit Factory is a response to the industrial surroundings of the exhibition space and a culmination of the past few months of research into my previous projects.  It consists of a large cardboard box, presented on a wooden pallet, containing seemingly random articles. Each piece inside the box represents different elements of other artists’ work, drawn from my research into site-specific installations in the Tate Modern and including some references to my own previous work.

I hope that the work offers a simple reflection of the eternal questioning of the role of art in society and also offers a gentle nudge in the back of our current governments attitude towards the funding of arts education. The process of creating art is broken down into its bare ingredients and presented without the creative input from the artist, yet because of it’s association with an exhibition, it’s function is still fulfilled by the collective experience of the viewer.

The work is supplemented by an external, misleading and nonsensical instruction manual for the construction of the elements inside the box, relying on a shared cultural experience of modern, flat-pack homeware outlets. These well known stores supply basic, shrink-wrapped furniture skeletons and reduce the craftsmanship of furniture makers into simplified two-dimensional illustrations, devoid of sentiment, authenticity and heritage; a fate which may well befall the the future of modern art, if we allow it.”

Descent of Life is the debut solo exhibition by Katie Brookes.

Katie is a recent graduate of the BA Illustration course at Camberwell College of Arts. The show features a new series of vast pen and ink drawings, which take their inspiration from Flemish Renaissance artists, notably Pieter Brueghel.

The drawings are a response to seemingly small details and stories, which have caught the attention of the artist. Katie takes these details and creates work that contains expansive meaning and symbolism. Within the landscape of the images there are multiple narratives that compose a scatterlogical discourse on the meanings of existentialism.

Eye Pain

EYEpaincaspar2

BA Drawing alumnus Caspar Rock has a show opening at Bearspace in Deptford this Friday 25 June. The show is a collaboration between Caspar and his sister Isabel. The pair have created a series of large scale drawing works, collaborative pieces, animation and sculpture.

‘The pair site their influences broadly; these include comics, Japanese animations, Gothic architecture, gangsta rap, mythology and Dantes Infernoe.

Isabel and Caspar Rock feel that reality is boring. The works in Eye Pain offer a parallel world that is anything but tedious. In the artists quest to bring their audience into their world, they are hosting a number of interactive events, such as a ‘zine workshop and lecture, and a drawing battle.’

Open: 25 June – 24 July 2010
Private View: Friday 25 June / 18.30 – 20.30
Venue: Bearspace Gallery, 152 Deptford High Street, London, SE8 3PQ.

Altered Bodies

SophieNoonan4blog

This image is from a series of work by BA Drawing 3rd year student Sophie Noonan.

“Using body pieces as a metaphor for emotional concealment Sophie explores the inner turmoil and contrasting external aesthetics people pursue everyday. Through the use of constructed and staged photographs, the ambiguity of what is seen makes the subject more compelling. The disturbing sci fi effect created by the body pieces and poses enhances the emotions the viewer sees is both seductive and repulsive. The awkward, yet familiar and vulnerable positions gives the viewer a way in, allowing them to sympathise and understand those emotions present in the work.”
