Camberwell Graduates Exhibit at the V&A

‘British-ish’ – at the V&A, 15 – 24 September 2011

University of the Arts London delivers some of the most challenging and innovative arts and design teaching in the UK and produces some of the country’s top designers from ceramicists and graphic artists to fashion designers and photo-journalists.

This exhibition is a celebration of inspiring new work from the University’s recent graduates, presenting designs that are distinctive in character but united by their formation in the crucible of British design education. Guest curator Giles Deacon selected designers whose humour, personality, innovation and skill marked them out from the crowd. Their work will be placed among existing exhibits in the V&A’s British Galleries as part of the London Design Festival celebrations.

These 2 pieces by Camberwell College of Arts graduates will feature in the show.

Top: ‘The P Project’ – Chieh Ting Huang (MA Designer Maker)

‘The P Project’ was drawn from the symbolism associated with lanterns in the cultures of the East and West. In common with Oriental lanterns, the inner section consists primarily of paper and wood.

The shape refers to industrial and marine lamps of the pre-war British Royal Navy and late 19th century factory lamp fittings. The etymology of ‘lantern’ shows the word to be derived from the concept of protecting the fragile light within. This project also explores notions of artistic freedom and how one can protect it.

Bottom: ‘Sweet Honest’ – Joanna Mires (BA Ceramics)

Joanna Mires’s work explores nostalgia, collection and ownership through recast Avon scent bottles from early 1970s. ‘Sweet Honesty’ is the name of the perfume held in the donkey shaped bottle.

Ornaments, familiar objects made from glass and ceramic, often outlive their owners. Mires values discarded collections, forcing the viewer to contemplate the identity of the owner through their personal experience of collecting. It is crucial to her work that the objects have been previously owned, once cherished items.

Neoteny

Billie Muraben is the second Camberwell College of Arts graduate to be selected by It’s Nice That as part of their pick of this year’s creative talent. Billie studied BA Illustration and it was her ‘Neoteny’ comic that caught the attention of the It’s Nice That team. They were particularly impressed with “its careful curation of words coupled with carefully composed, tonally renderend frames.”

Another Sight

Camberwell College of Arts BA Graphic Design graduate Michael Guppy has been chosen as one of this year’s talents to watch by It’s Nice That. His work is currently featured alongside 11 other creatives in the Graduates 2011 exhibition at the House of Propellers in Clerkenwell.

Michael on his work – “The web is a perfect example of how technology transforms society, and we’re right amidst it. This is where the main influence for my work stems from, examining how we interact with the web and how it might change. Although it never ends up being that serious, I tend to go with the more playful ideas.”

Illustration – Darryl Clifton and Adrian Shaughnessy

The following text is taken from the 2011 Camberwell College of Arts BA Illustration catalogue, which was produced to accompany the OVO Show:

In a world where the image is becoming the prime means of communication the subject of Illustration is growing in popularity and the role of the Illustrator becoming increasingly critical. This years graduating cohort from BA Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts describe all the ambition and energy that is required to meet the challenges that an image heavy world presents. In that spirit of enquiry and broad engagement a number of burning questions on what their subject is, and what it can be, have been put to Adrian Shaughnessy, celebrated educator, author and designer and Darryl Clifton, Design Programme Director at Camberwell College of Arts.

What is the role and place of education in a society that values training and explicit skill over more implicit personal development and transformation?

AS: Depends what sort of education you are talking about. If someone wants to become a doctor, they must study medicine – and related sciences – with a view to becoming an expert. Same with engineers, dentists and computer scientists. The problem arises when we talk about a general education. In my view, the role of education is to teach people how to learn. The reason for this is that few of us will end up doing the same job for our entire lives, and many of us will be required to retrain at some point in the future. With this in mind, I can see a move to a sort of ‘perpetual university’ model. In the future we may still go to university, but for shorter periods with a view to continuing our education at later stages.

DC: It’s reasonable to suggest that ‘learning’ is a form of personal, intellectual and behavioural transformation and that the processes of education deliver situations, experiences and stimuli that are enabling. I would wholeheartedly agree with Adrian that developing the capacity to continue learning, adapting and transforming – in short to cultivate intelligence – is something that all educators should aim for through those processes. The practical implications of not being able to do that are challenging for the reasons stated above.

Help Make Peckham Space Art Clubs A Reality

Peckham Space needs to raise £2,000 for Art Clubs to take place this December 2011.

Art Clubs will benefit over 100 young people from Peckham, providing access to creative and educational activity.

We know this is possible with your help. All we need is 100 people to give £20.

To donate visit – www.wedidthis.org.uk/projects/arts-clubs

Peckham Space’s FREE Art Clubs invite young people from Peckham, London, SE15 to take part in art activities during school holiday periods.

Alongside interactive exhibitions, we run tutor-led workshops exploring different art methods and materials, from collage to drawing to mono-printing. This free resource is available to everyone, but is especially popular with young people and their parents who are keen to get involved fun activities during the day when they’re not at school. We have previously run Art Clubs during the Easter holidays which were attended by almost 900 people. There has been such huge demand for them that we will be running them again during August, and would love to continue at Christmas too.

Please spread the word. Peckham Space needs you! Thank you.
