Azalea’s Amazons

Azaleas Amazons - Daniel David Freeman

Camberwell College of Arts BA Illustration alumnus Daniel David Freeman has a solo show opening this Thursday 12 January at Beach in London.

The show explores the life of fictional character, Rick Azalea. ‘Azalea’s Amazons’ is an exploration of the character’s inner most fantasies. Using felt tip pens and paper, the artist invites the viewer to engage with a range of abstract and extraordinary characters who live only in the realm of Azalea’s imagination.

The gallery space will replicate the protagonist’s workspace. Showcasing where Rick Azalea worked, lived and loved his many Amazonian lovers. Accompanying the installation will be a biographical piece of creative writing outlining Azalea’s many trials and tribulations.

As a freelance illustrator Daniel David Freeman has worked with a range of clients including Adidas, Nike, Dazed, Vice, I-d, Protein, Blink, Mixpak, Jaguar Shoes and Boiler Room. He also provides illustration for cult DJ collective GETME! as well as designing his own T-Shirt label, Ranks, which is sold internationally online and in-store at the Hideout.

Public House Projects

Josie Cockram

Public House Projects is a new artist run gallery space above the Gowlett Pub in Peckham supporting the work of emerging and established artists.

Opening on Thursday 12 January the first exhibition will feature a new installation by Camberwell College of Arts BA Sculpture alumna Josie Cockram. Josie was also the recipient of the Acme 2011/12 Camberwell Studio Award.

‘Two Works: Looped’ playfully intertwines the mundane with the absurd. The installation mixes references to current digital techniques with a somewhat nostalgic nod to more traditional analogue methods of capturing images. Projections are looped and allowed to slowly run out-of-sync while the images reflect onto glass screens. The images are accompanied by sound and text, creating a deep collage of audio-visual information.

Public House Projects – 62 Gowlett Road, (above the Gowlett pub), London SE15 4HY

Open: Wednesday – Sunday, 12:00 – 18:00

Modern Tone

Jesse Wine - Modern Tone

Jesse Wine – Modern Tone

Camberwell College of Arts BA Sculpture alumnus Jesse Wine has a solo show at The Sunday Painter.

Dates: 9 December 2011 – 15 January 2012

Private view: Friday 9 December, 18.00 – 21.00

Venue: Sunday Painter 1st Floor, 12-16 Blenheim Grove, London, SE15 4QL

Taking a medium-sized leaf from the 2010 Picasso ‘Mediterranean years’ exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery Britannia Street site, Jesse Wine has transformed the rather more modest sized Sunday Painter space into a museum style viewing chamber in which to experience, whilst edging around in a legally-complicit gap, a new body of sculptures and a one-off replica of Picasso’s 1951 painting Les Pigeonnes Perches the artist has had commissioned.

With the selection of sculptures that includes a faux-marble sagging bottom and a ceramic pot that seems to be alluding to some vague primitive culture sitting atop a colossal plinth alongside the cost-price Picasso replica an odd array of domesticated art-objects have been elevated to uneasy heights.

Jesse Wine – Education: MA Sculpture – Royal College of Art, 2010. BA Sculpture – Camberwell College of Arts, 2007.

Recent solo shows include -  Dax Wax, Hayward Gallery, Concrete Cafe, London 2011, and every portrait a self portrait, kinda like every pizza a masterpizza, Franklin Parrasch Gallery, New York, 2010.

Recent group shows include Slipped Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge, 2011 and Cult of the Ruin University of California Irvine, California 2010.

Off Modern Late at the Barbican

Off Modern Late at the Barbican

As part of the OMA/Progress exhibition curated by Rotor at the Barbican Art Gallery, Off Modern presents an night of sound, visuals and performances by artists, filmmakers, designers and musicians. The event will take place on Thursday 24 November in the Barbican Foyers, Art Gallery, as well as in the labyrinthine of corridors and public spaces, inside and out.

In the Gallery events space on Level 3, James Bulley and Daniel Jones debut Maelstrom, a sonic sculpture that sources sound fragments uploaded to the internet, feeding these through a notated score that voices infinite chord variations from the collected data.

In a collaboration between musician Lewis Rainsbury and filmmaker/photographer Ciaran Wood, the pair present a series of video and audio works recorded exclusively on smartphones and treated into a series of looping soundtracks and landscapes.

Artist Lewis Wright’s piece ‘Live From Distant Shores’ features on the Frobisher Crescent Sculpture Court, a compilation of live CCTV feeds from desolate ports and jetties in the UK, exploring the cartographical possibilities of the internet by providing mysterious glimpses of nautical terrain.

Photographer Tom Saunderson presents new work based on the architecture of the Barbican itself, whilst artists Tom Pearson and Hannah Bould transform that same architecture into a hanging mobile, reimagining the traditional models used by architectural practices.

Eat Your Own Ears curate Blackout Sessions, one of two stages at Off Modern Late open until 1am. Blackout Sessions, run by Late of The Pier’s Sam Potter, are gigs in which the bands play in complete darkness. With the line up kept secret Blackout Sessions provide a unique opportunity for an audience, a chance to experience live music free from expectations and preconceptions.

On the second stage London Symphony Orchestra present Aftershock, a clubnight featuring a series of unique performances from LSO players, with live sound-tracking as well as djing and visuals provided by Off Modern collaborators Straight 2 Video. Further into the night sub-base takes over with DJ sets from Off Modern friends and family.
