Video documenting the third commissioned exhibition in Peckham Space’s new venue on Peckham Square. Artist Jessica Voorsanger invited people to take part in Peckham Heroes, a celebration of celebrity and historical personalities who have a connection with Peckham through costume and karaoke.
This video captures the launch event and artist talk, during which Jessica Voorsanger was in conversation with Dr Jean Wainwright, an art critic and art historian who is currently the presenter for The Art Newspaper (TV) and who holds a senior lecturer post at the University for the Creative Arts Rochester England. This talk addressed the themes of art and celebrity and investigate it’s relevance to contemporary art practices today.
Peckham Space’s forth commission, ‘Slipstream’ by David Cotterrell opens on 24 May.
Mobile Conference returns on Saturday 2 April 2011. After the success of last year’s event Mobile Conference is back!
What is Mobile Conference?
Mobile Conference is organised by Peckham Space and the South London Gallery as part of an ongoing partnership looking at commissioned art works in the public realm.
Mobile Conference is a tour of off-site artist projects in south east London. The tour takes place across four venues including art galleries, a housing estate and a community centre and aims to provoke discussion on the theme of urban environments and changing social histories.
This video clip documents last year’s event with Harold Offeh, Jess Thom, The People Speak and Demos.
This year artists Lottie Child, David Cotterrell and Febrik will present their work followed by a discussion with invited guests including residents, young people, artists, educators, representatives from Southwark Council and Tenants and Resident Associations, play workers and commissioners.
To book your place on this years Mobile Conference please contact SLG on: 020 7703 6120 or mail@southlondongallery.org
New video for Alpines directed by Camberwell BA Graphic Design alumni Kate Moross and Hans Lo.
Kate is also taking part in Pick Me Up – the contemporary graphic art fair at Somerset House, which runs from 17 – 27 March. The fair features some of “the best, most innovative and avant-garde graphic artists, collectives and galleries from the UK and across the world” and looking at the line-up for this year it should be well worth making the effort to get down there and check it out!
This transfixing short film is the work of Camberwell BA Graphic Design 3rd year Charlie von Rotberg. Here’s the synopsis in Charlie’s words:
’10,000 Miles From A Car Window’ is an observational film of a 10,000 mile journey starting in the UK and ending in Mongolia. It was filmed on a Kodak Zi8 handheld pocket camera (about £100′s worth!), and most of the soundtrack was made from an amalgamation of sounds from the original footage. The film takes the viewer through 4 legs using sound and vision to create an immersive and hypnotic experience. We see drastic contrasts in pace, with emphasis on how calmness meets franeticness during the varying environments we are taken through on the journey.
Myself and three other team mates (all of whom are studying art based degrees at Glasgow School Of Art and Northumbria) saw 16 countries of varying climates and terrains in 7 long weeks of driving during the summer of 2010 all in aid of two fantastic charities.
We managed to raise just over £3000 for them by campaigning online, staging events and selling ice cream! The trip was part of “The Mongol Rally”, an annual event that raises money for charity each year. theadventurists.com
The film was for part of my Unit 10 BA Graphic Design course and in Unit 11 I hope to take the whole thing apart again and remix it into a live performance in collaboration with Beaty Heart. It’ll be accompanied by a live soundtrack that triggers visuals from the film telling the narrative in a completely different light.’
