WatchMePivot online blog and magazine launch

WatchMePivot is a new multidisciplinary platform founded by BA (Hons) Graphic Design student David Hinga, for young creatives to showcase their work through an online blog and quarterly magazine.

David says “We showcase work from every area of the creative industry, from graphic design, illustration, product design to conceptual fine art, sculpture, painting, photography, film, sound and music. We hope to provide our viewers with more than just great work but to showcase the unseen talents hiding in their bedrooms and classrooms. Hopefully by doing so we can inspire more great work and connect a wide selection of work with a greater audience of art lovers and artists.”

Mid-February saw the launch of the first ever WatchMePivot magazine issue, featuring work from a number of up-and-coming artists, as well as hosting four exclusive to print interviews with four artists from around the world who they believe are ones to watch out for this year!

Visit the WatchMePivot website to find out more about how you can get involved.

The Third Mind

Paul Gallagher

Last month we announced the opening of a new gallery space in Peckham called Public House Projects. This month’s show features the work of Camberwell College of Arts BA Painting alumnus Paul Gallagher.

‘The Third Mind’ is a reference to the William Burroughs’ book of short stories, devised using his experimental “cut-up” technique, literally cutting the pages up and then combining and re-arranging the pieces to form new narratives and often-surreal imagery. Burroughs describes the feeling of paranoia induced by ‘really looking at what is before our eyes on an everyday level as the “naked lunch” of consumption.

Paul works with collage and found imagery. His practice raises questions regarding accepted notions of beauty and identity. The large-scale compositions featured in the exhibition move the work into a more sculptural, architectural area, where the abstracted forms escape the picture plane and threaten to spread out into the space.

Paul graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2011. ‘The Third Mind’ is his first solo show.

Bringing Objects to Life

Leading London production company Nexus has recently signed Camberwell College of Arts BA Graphic Design alumna Kris Hofmann.

Chris O’Reilly, Co-Founder and Executive Producer at Nexus, said, “Kris is a really exciting young talent. She’s helped us in recent months with the creative development of some projects and has shown fantastic design skills, a very clear thought process, and a tremendous amount of energy. We’re big fans of her previous work and think she will be a great addition to the Nexus team.”

Having moved to London from Austria in 2004 to take up a place at Camberwell Kris subsequently went on to study animation at the RCA. Her graduation film ‘Breakfast’ caught the eye of the film-making industry and has since toured film festivals throughout the world. This in turn helped her to gain funding from the Austrian Film Council to make ‘Screwed Up’.

You can listen to an interview with Kris talking about her work, influences and time at Camberwell in a podcast over on Directors Notes.

The Shape of Things

The Shape of Things flyer

Camberwell College of Arts – BA Graphic Design: Year 1 Exhibition

Private View: Thursday 9 February, 18.30 – 21.00

Dates: 9 – 10 February 2012

Venue: House Gallery, 70 Church Street, Camberwell, SE5 8QZ

This Thursday sees the opening of ‘The Shape of Things’ an exhibition of publications by Camberwell College of Arts 1st year BA Graphic Design students.

On display will be 12 group publications each containing a different essay taken from ‘The Shape of Things’ by Vilém Flusser.

The project is the culmination of a three week project run by Camberwell BA Graphic Design alumni Jake Hopwood, Alex Hough and Charlie Abbott.

About ‘The Shape of Things’:

The book contains an array of essays on design by the seminal media critic and philosopher Vilém Flusser. It puts forward the view that our future depends on design.

In a series of insightful essays on such ordinary ‘things’ as wheels, carpets, pots, umbrellas and tents, Flusser emphasizes the interrelationships between art and science, theology and technology, and archaeology and architecture.

Just as formal creativity has produced both weapons of destruction and great works of art, Flusser believed that the shape of things (and the designs behind them) represents both a threat and an opportunity for designers of the future.
