Approaching the In-Between

CCW Foundation Diploma in Art and Design lecturer Laurence Noga and Wimbledon College of Art BA (Hons) Fine Art Painting alumna Nancy Cogswell’s new exhibition ‘Approaching the In-Between’ opens this week at Eleven Spitalfields Gallery.

“The work of Nancy Cogswell and Laurence Noga shares a preoccupation with the in-between. This is not only reflected in the process, but also through emotive and contained feeling for space. This space is explored using colour as a structuring form, activating sensation and emotional specificity.”

What will the internship involve?

Peckham Space is delighted to offer alumni of Camberwell College of Arts the opportunity to apply for an internship which will provide a great opportunity to contribute to the success of Peckham Space as a new arts venue in London. Network Artist Talk @ Peckham Space

Network Artist Talk at Peckham SpaceNetwork Artist Talk at Peckham SpaceNetwork Artist Talk at Peckham SpaceNetwork Artist Talk at Peckham SpaceNetwork Artist Talk at Peckham SpaceNetwork Artist Talk at Peckham Space

On the 11 October Peckham Space hosted the artist talk for the current show ‘Network’. The event was a special ‘in conversation’ with artist Sonia Boyce and cultural critic Bonnie Greer.

Taking as its starting point the specially commissioned film work by Sonia Boyce, the talk explored the theme of migration in Boyce’s work to date, and how her investigation of social networking connects with changing concepts of community.

Greer also investigated the development of Boyce’s socially engaged practice and Peckham Space’s unique commissioning process which invited project partners Southwark Council’s Visual And Performing Arts (VAPA) Young Women’s Group to draft the project brief and join the selection panel to directly commission Boyce for the work.

‘Network’ looks at how forms of communication such as mobile phones and social networking sites like Facebook have become the most popular ways for young people to maintain their relationships with friends and family.

The exhibition is comprised of four screens, each showing a different element of the film and choreographed in the gallery space as an installation: a set of dialogues featuring the young people in front of as well as behind the camera. Shot in cinematic high definition, the ‘Network’ film charts the nature of the relationships between four young women from Peckham, south London and the languages that have formed around the technologies they use to stay in touch.

Sonia Boyce said: “I was particularly interested in the type of conversations that are generated and amongst groups of young people. I wanted to explore their inter-connected micro-communities, and that boundary between the public and the private that is bridged online and through personal mobile phones. It’s fascinating to me that young people’s communities can reach geographically and culturally distant areas through the use of new technology, and how this can challenge traditional notions of the concept of “community.”

The discussion will be available as a podcast via the Peckham Space website very soon. ‘Network’ continues until 19 November.

LuckyPDF @ Frieze

LuckyPDFLuckyPDF

LuckyPDF TV is back! Over the next four days (13-16 October) LuckyPDF will be broadcasting live from Frieze Art Fair having been commissioned as part of this year’s Frieze Projects. Join them from 16.00 each day at the Fair or online.

Plugs aside the main reason for posting about LuckyPDF is that due to the nature of their practice, which the group’s John Hill (Camberwell BA Drawing alumnus) describes “as being located at the forefront of communication, networking and new methods of production”, it means that a whole slew of Camberwell College of Arts alumni have been and continue to be a part of their projects.

Their Frieze commission will feature 50 established and emerging artists, curators and critics. The list of names includes Cory Arcangel, Jeremy Deller, David Batchelor and Jeremy Bailey. The Camberwell alumni that will be involved are – Daniel Swan (BA Graphic Design), Samara Scott (BA Illustration), Gili Tal (BA Painting), Chris King and Robert Prouse (both BA Drawing).

Happy viewing!

The Indiscipline of Painting

Andy Warhol - 'Eggs' (detail)

Daniel Sturgis, Course Director of BA Painting at Camberwell College of Arts has curated a new show at Tate St Ives entitled ‘The Indiscipline of Painting’.

The show is an international group exhibition and ‘considers how the languages of abstraction have remained urgent, relevant and critical as they have been revisited and reinvented by subsequent generations of artists over the last 50 years. It goes on to demonstrate the way in which the history and legacy of abstract painting continues to inspire artists working today.’

‘The show brings together works by British, American and European artists made over the last five decades and features major new commissions and loans. It includes important works by Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Gerhard Richter and Bridget Riley alongside other lesser known artists such as Tomma Abts, Martin Barré, Mary Heilmann and Jeremy Moon.’

Daniel has curated the show alongside Martin Clark, Artistic Director, Tate St Ives and Sarah Shalgosky, Curator, University of Warwick.

The show continues until 3 January 2012.
